ACCRA, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has officially forwarded a detailed report on electoral violence during the 2020 and 2024 general elections for legal review and advice, the presidency confirmed Wednesday.
The report, compiled by Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno, recorded shootings and clashes between party supporters and security forces during the two general elections.
These disturbances led to multiple fatalities and injuries across several constituencies. Eight people were reportedly killed during the 2020 elections, while three others lost their lives in the 2024 polls.
Mahama is seeking legal guidance on the prosecution of those responsible or involved in the violence and determining appropriate legal and institutional measures to both ensure justice for victims and prevent future recurrence in the West African country.
Prior to the country's 2024 general election, Mahama promised to launch a full-scale investigation into the violence that characterized the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections. ■
