BEIRUT, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) on Wednesday announced a 12.5-million-euro (about 14.6 million U.S. dollars) initiative aimed at supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), according to a statement by the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon.
The project, carried out by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aims to support the army in post-conflict recovery, boosting security, and aiding reconstruction efforts in southern Lebanon
"This initiative enhances the army's capacity and long-term resilience, directly contributing to Lebanon's safety and stability," LAF Commander General Rodolphe Haykal said during the launch ceremony.
EU Ambassador Sandra De Waele reaffirmed the bloc's commitment to Lebanon, noting that the project demonstrates its steadfast dedication to peace and stability.
"Alongside EU member states, we are delivering over 600 million dollars in aid to areas affected by conflict, reinforcing our push for full implementation of Resolution 1701 and compliance with the November 2024 ceasefire," she added.
"Stability is the cornerstone of lasting peace, recovery, and inclusive development," UNDP Resident Representative Blerta Aliko said.
This EU-backed initiative is a response to the prolonged impact of the 13-month conflict, which continues to result in casualties and damage vital infrastructure and services across the country.
The project is designed to support the LAF's efforts to assist local communities in southern Lebanon by removing rubble and unexploded ordnance, restoring essential services like water and health facilities, and fostering stronger collaboration with residents. ■
