BERLIN, May 31 (Xinhua) -- West Ham striker Niclas Fullkrug is not one for the limelight. The 32-year-old Germany international approaches his career with the demeanor of an ordinary employee, downplaying the glamour often associated with elite football.
"I'm looking forward to my second year in the Premier League. My first wasn't the best," Fullkrug told Xinhua ahead of Germany's UEFA Nations League semifinal against Portugal on Wednesday in Munich.
Fullkrug, who endured two significant injury spells last season, spoke positively about the style of play in England's top flight.
"I like the style and hope to do better next season," he said. "The Premier League is dynamic and physical. Teams follow their own path, go head-to-head with an open visor. It's more of a direct power struggle."
By contrast, Fullkrug noted that teams in the Bundesliga tend to adjust more to opponents' tactics, adding, "There's more tribute paid to the opponent's style."
Despite media speculation about a potential move, Fullkrug dismissed the rumors.
"I'm happy there," he said. "I read reports suggesting I'm not, but that's not the case. I'm back to a good fitness level and can't wait for next season."
The German added that Premier League football suits him well, particularly with the space created in and around the box. "I'm back to confidence," he said.
Adjusting to life in London took some time, Fullkrug admitted, especially for someone who described himself as "not the big city type." Prior to his move, he had always lived in the countryside.
Now based along the River Thames, Fullkrug said his family has embraced city life. "You can do a lot of nice things with the family," he said. "We found our cafes, restaurants, stables and gymnastics clubs for the kids."
His daughter is also picking up English. "I like that very much as a father," he said, adding that after his career, he plans to return to rural living. "But for now, we're exploring the advantages of a big city - the lakes, the parks, and all the green spaces."
Fullkrug also reflected on his return to the national team following an absence of several months. "I'm happy to be back," he said. "Maybe not because of a stunning season, but because of certain qualities I bring."
Since making his debut for Germany's national team in 2022, Fullkrug has gone on to win 22 caps and has become a reliable attacking presence, playing and scoring in both the 2022 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2024.
Often described as a late bloomer, Fullkrug sees himself as a passionate professional rather than a star.
"I'm living my dream, playing football," he said. "It's not about the league level. It's about the passion I feel for the sport." ■
