BELGRADE, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Zoran Radojicic, a doctor with the University Children's hospital in Belgrade, was elected on Thursday as the new mayor of the Serbian capital city.

As a PhD and specialist in children urology, Radojicic was proposed by the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, which won the April 13 local elections in Belgrade, marking the beginning of his four-year mandate on the helm of the country's most populated city.

In his speech, Radojicic vowed to improve the everyday life of its citizens by turning Belgrade into a "modern European metropolis".

Speaking about his priorities, he said that he will insist on the construction of another building of the University Children's Hospital as well as to ensure that the construction of Belgrade's first subway begins in 2020.

Radojicic also pledged to continue all construction projects started by the administration of his predecessor Sinisa Mali, who was recently elected as the new finance minister, after his mandate ended in May.
